	Katy Spore is orignally from the Outer Banks of NC and she has made that one of her defining personality traits. She also attended North Carolina State University. During her time there she studied graphic design, discovered her love for cookout milkshakes, and sang too much karaoke with her roommate. a side project.

What started as a way to keep up my adobe skills while home for the summer turned into a full time freelance gig. I began with illustrating my local pier and a coffeeshop I work in. After gaining some traction online, people started approaching me and asking if I could create a graphic for their local business or favorite landmark. Thus the hometown collection was born. One can find the graphics in various forms on that Outer Banks at Duck’s Cottage Coffee and Books, Mom’s Sweet Shop, Seagreen Gallery, John’s Drive In, and Downtown Books.

My bosses at Duck’s Cottage Coffee and Books immediately took interest in the illustrations I was producing. They decided to start selling hats, t-shirts, stickers, and prints with the Duck’s Cottage design on them. After working there for four summers, it was a huge honor to have my graphics on their merchandise.

As I gained some momentum at Duck’s Cottage I started selling the other graphics at some of my favorite places on the beach. I sold stickers and prints of the town graphics at Seagreen Gallery. Soon after I made a graphic for an awesome local dessert/vintage clothing store called Mom’s Sweet Shop. They loved the graphic and decided to sell my stickers.

After the success of the town and store graphics, I wanted to make something else in the same style with the same colors. Over the summer of 2019 I interned at the North Carolina Aquarium on Roanoke Island as their exhibition intern. While there I was able to create graphics for their S.T.A.R. center which stands for Sea Turtle Assistance and Rehabilitation. The S.T.A.R. center goes the extra mile to help sea turtles in need on the east coast so I wanted to create something that could repay their hard work. So I created a reduce plastic graphic featuring a sea turtle to further raise awareness of the growing issue of plastics in our oceans. I produced stickers of the graphic and they are currently being sold at Seagreen Gallery. I have been donating all of the profits from these stickers to another organization named N.E.S.T. (Network for Endangered Sea Turtles) that works closely with the S.T.A.R. center.

deep sea exploration.

Descent is a two player board game that revolves around deep sea exploration and the challenges and risks involved. The players slowly work through the various zones of the ocean, making discoveries which propel them into deeper and more unexplored zones. The object of the game is to make a discovery in the deepest, and least explored, zone of the ocean. The players alternate taking turns, which each consist of two phases: Discovery, and Events. First they draw a discovery card, and attempt to successfully make the discovery. The player is able to gamble on discoveries, taking a higher risk for a chance of a higher reward. Discoveries grant the player either fame or funding, which push them into the deeper zones. After making discoveries, the player draws an Event card, which can benefit or harm them, or just encourage interactions between the players’ decks. The first player to reach 30 fame and 30 funding, and roll a successful discovery in the final zone, wins the game.

	process.

At start of creating our game we struggled bringing all of our elements together in away that was easy for us to produce in the time period we had. During this phase, we also had to consistently test the game play with mock up cards (pictured to the right) to make sure the game would work correctly when the game was fully produced.

	inspiration.


The branding and general visual language of Descent is based around the early art and documentation surrounding the deep sea in the late 1800s. One of our main inspirations was 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Each discovery card has a unique illustration that is reminiscent of scientific illustrations and traditional block-prints. The cards in both decks, the game board, and the box all have ornate painted borders that are inspired by borders of the Art Nouveau period, which was the predominant style during the height of fascination with deep sea exploration and research. The reason we wanted to refer back to early diving history was due to the current lack of focus in the scientific community towards research in this area. Since the interest isn’t currently there, we wanted to refer to what the style may have looked like when it was at its peak popularity in the general public.

SUS is a sustainable yet attainable fashion journal for young women. Sustainable magazines and blogs can often sound a tad pretentious and shoot for an older, much wealthier audience. I wanted to create a magazine that was accessible for a younger audience and would help high schoolers to mid-twenty year old girls find a way to maintain their fashion without contributing largely to the climate crisis. SUS consists of tips, tricks, and current news on brands to curate an ethical closest.

After much thought Thinx Inc. decided to sunset it’s beloved tween period underwear line, BTWN, and create a more teen focused brand called Thinx Teens. This new brand would be relatable, playful, yet straightforward for teens around the world to feel more comfortable during their periods.

	shape language &#38;amp; color palette

The library of shapes below were create to be used universally across all platforms — social, packaging, website, and other brand touchpoints. The shapes were intented to represent different bodies, sustainable products, and the current generation. Vibrant and fresh would be a goodway to describe the color palette. Leveraging Tangerine, Thinx for All’s brand color, but in a new context. Reimagining hot pink so that it feels bold and un-gendered.

The Thinx Teens socials feature various how it works content, evergreen, as well as some text FAQs. The graphic FAQs are formated with text over top our signature shape language in a contrasting way. The Thinx Teens social platforms serve as a safe place where teens and parents can come for more information on the product.

We designed packaging for the 3 Pack assortment bundles and a direct to consumer packaging as well. Both pieces of packaging came with an insert and a holographic sticker.

Direct mailers across the Thinx brands are full of product education and FAQS. A fun way to present this information in the teens channel was to make use of our shapes. Doing this made the mailers fun, engaging, and easy to consume.

	a brand for a new generation

Creating Thinx Teens allowed me to see further into the lives and mindsets of gen z and gen alpha. These generations come at life boldly and we really wanted to encapsulate that in the brand. We were happy to have built something teens today can identify with and feel comfortable in.

With any of the main line of boxes, the gift recipient will receive an insert in their box. On this insert is a game or activity that is themed to the box they recieved. We also sent out branded postcards after a gift was recieved to remind them of the brand and tell our story more.

Emails were designed and sent out in a newsletter style with Zuley, our CEO, being the one of the main subjects. The emails were built out to be fun and playful much like the rest of the Viledge brand.

Every order also receives a branded sticker sheet with Vildege sayings. The oval stickers below were also used on the craft cardboard boxes for special edition boxes.

After creating new inserts and sticker sheets we photographed the special edition box products with the new print materials. A shot list and general feel was created to acheive the look pictured.
